Literacy

Below are some ideas for music educators on literacy, a big "buzz word" in administrative circles these days.

POWERPOINT PRESENTATION ON LITERACY:

I created  a short presentation on Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences relative to music literacy, and I annotated my sources both in the presentation and in the notes section.

LINKS TO LITERACY:

The links below deal with literacy in the arts, specifically music education and band education when appropriate:

This is a short position paper from the Montana Bandmasters Association:

This link is an excellent presentation aimed at increasing musical literacy in the young and developing band program by Pulitzer Prize winning composer Michael Colgrass.  The article/presentation deals with teaching literacy through composition and improvisation using non-traditional notation (Requires Adobe PDF reader):

The link below is to a somewhat controversial article that claims that the "No Child Behind" act is seriously hurting music education programs in the United States:

The following link is a wonderful resource from the Ontario Music Educators Association detailing how to link music to other disciplines by using literacy.  There are even MS Word and MS Powerpoint files on this site!  Think Literacy: Cross-Curricular Approaches, Grades 7 –12 was developed by a writing team, commissioned by the Expert Panel on Students at Risk (Literacy), to support teachers as they use reading, writing and oral communication approaches in their classrooms:

Music Instruction Aids Verbal Memory:  This Hong Kong study explored the possibility that music training changes the left brain, aiding other left-brain operations.  The article discusses music and literacy throughout and makes several interesting arguments:

Note

I used the search engine www.google.com. to locate each of these links.

I used Microsoft Powerpoint to create the presentation and applied various effects to each page.  You can see the effects by downloading the full version.  Otherwise you can play a web-version that is scaled down.
